We programmed the route into Wendy. Her message to us was ‘there are no climbs on your route today’ . Marvellous. At last. We rejoice.
It was a grey, misty day but it was flat.
We were bowling along nicely at a pleasant and comfortable 15 miles per hour. Alison declares we will be at our destination by lunch time. Oh no we won’t. The road surface makes a considerable difference to our time taken. Difficult and uncomfortable to ride on a fully loaded bike. Kevin said the roads were all paved today. We have different standards. When we arrived in Commachio they had rolled out the equivalent of a red carpet for us. New surface, smooth and a joy to ride. We had about 500 metres and were moving at pace before we were directed onto a different road. The area is known for its wildlife and birds in particular. We cycled alongside herons, egrets and corn buntings. But a lot of birds means lots and lots of flying insects. A silent afternoon with no talking, singing, laughing or even breathing. We have had sufficient protein. I have a plan for tomorrow. We arrived at the Po delta and the sun came out.
This evening we had a stroll around town. The locals are preparing for their annual festival this weekend to celebrate eels. As you know we love a party, but on this occasion we can’t stay to enjoy these local delicacies.
Commachio is known as ‘Little Venice’ . Our restaurant for the evening where eels are the dish of the day. Quite a change to bolognaise.
Daily blog exclusive tomorrow. Exciting insect avoidance advice. It will be essential reading.
Go Alison x 2. I am amazed at your endurance and ability to keep going (and smiling) in such conditions! Beats my car journey to Orkney, but I bet I’ve seen more rain than you 😁.
Insect avoidance – search out a local beekeeper, bound to be able to lend you a couple of protective suits. It’ll look as if the extraterrestrials have started cycling – bound to make the local press.
