Our accommodation last night was a converted Augustinian convent. Via Lauretana is another ancient pilgrim route. It connects Siena to Cortona and is a branch of the Francigena. St Christopher is the patron saint of travellers and pilgrims and this is a well known fresco of him in the church attached to the old convent we stayed in last night. We had our photo taken at the L’Eroica sign at the start of the day. We were feeling brave and strong.
Not for long. It became apparent that we had inadvertently joined a major vintage cycling event. Over 9,000 people from all over the world taking part. Plus Jean and Mary.
Men and Women in Lycra streamed past us and enthusiastically encouraged us up the hills.
Bicycles everywhere. There were long, medium and short routes to select from. We decided to bend the rules (route) a little and did the minuscule route. The L’’Eroica route. Open vistas on the sun scorched land with stunning views. Then we arrived in Siena. A picture of the Duomo. We are doing a guide tour tomorrow.
The receptionist at the hotel asked where we are going next. We have a problem. The map has holes in it and is missing an entire section. Who knows where we will? But one thing is certain. We have a day off tomorrow to be proper tourists and plan a route. And a lie in. Lovely.
I’ve read about l’Eroica – you can see some immaculate bikes from yesteryear; I even once thought of entering – but the road to ruin is paved with good intentions – so I’m just very happy reading about your adventures. Well done the pair of you – just brilliant.
