Day 18 Sabaudia to Nettuno

Cycling distance 26 miles

Car 80 miles

When we said we would never do the tunnels again, we meant by bike of course. Doing them in the back of an X-type Jaguar puts a fresh perspective on the ride.

Today was Operation Black Bag Retrieval day

I had left this bag in the hotel in Gaeta. Retrieval involved intricate negotiations with Sara (hotel receptionist), Sara’s mother, Sara’s father, Sara’s mother’s friend, a friend of that friend and Gianni. Keep up. We live life in the fast lane.

The wonderful Gianni drove us the 80 mile round trip through all the tunnels – twice. It is very comfortable in a Jaguar. Who would do it on a bike? A huge thank you to our support network in Italy.

Conversation in a mixture of English and Italian varied from Gianni’s grandmother’s pasta to weddings, the pope to extraterrestrial activities, electric cars to Covid. All in all a very satisfactory morning.

Our lunch stop. We continue to be under surveillance. We know you are watching and you are not very good at hiding.
Another stunning ride. Mountains on one side and the coast on the other side.
It is the weekend and the locals are having fun in the sun. A lively wind making it a good day for water sports but not so easy for cycling.

This evening we sat at a bar and watched two consecutive weddings in the church in the square. Lots of fun. Followed by dinner and a live band in the street. Alison is finishing the day with another Duolingo lesson. We are packing it in.

We are putting together a plan. Rome in two days but a big climb tomorrow.

We are concerned that we have not collected enough stamps for our Credenziale. Tomorrow we will be visiting every church, cafe, bar along the way. It could be a long day.

Good night.
