Day 34 Chioggia to Venice

The final destination

Distance 26.59

We wake in disbelief. We cannot believe that we are almost there.

A short ride to the ferry. While we are waiting we have a moment of worry when a large party of cyclists turn up. Will there be room for us on the vaporetta? No problem. We were second in the queue and more importantly we are told, as pensioners we have priority.

The ride along the coastal path of Pellestrina
Car ferry to the Lido

A cycle along the Lido and a visit to La Chiesa di Malamacco.

We view the recently restored XVth century altar piece. It was inspired by the altar in St Mark’s Basilica and is unusual because it folds in half.
Navigating the complicated travel itinerary. We are on a second car ferry.
This is the way to do it. No hills, bumpy roads, large lorries. We glide through the beauty of Venice on the ferry.

My cousin Andrew has contacted us with a concern about our arrival in Venice. Our statistics show that we have climbed 19,418 feet but have not reported large descents. What will happen when we arrive at sea level in Venice? We can confirm that there are no cliff edges in Venice and that the lack of reporting must be due to altitude sickness.

We are unsurprised to learn from Andrew that we have climbed higher than Mont Blanc (15772 ft). Indeed we have cycled up the equivalent of Mount Kilimanjaro. We need a holiday.

What have we been looking forward to most?

Clean clothes and tea or coffee in a china cup.

And seeing family and friends of course.

Alison in a clean nightdress surveying our clean washing. Wonderful. Somethings have needed a double wash.

A wonderful welcome from Chris and Shehla who have organised a lively social whirl for us. We have celebratory spritz, dinners, lunches, exhibitions, drinks with an internationally renowned artist, a guided tour with Luisella, shopping and so much more.

We will let you know how it goes.

But first a night’s sleep. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a little tiring.

Good night from Venice
