The website said the Cathedral in Castellaneta was open from 8.00am. Just after 8.00am we went in search of another stamp for our Credenziale.

We arrived at the Cathedral and it was closed. It did not look promising. Eventually just after 9.00 am the Cathedral opened and we were able to go inside. But no stamp this morning.

We climbed and we climbed toward Matera and arrived ahead of schedule, before our room was ready. All this training has paid off.

Water to rehydrate
Chips for salt replacement
Alcohol for muscle relaxation
We wanted the complete pilgrim experience and are staying in a cave within a stone house.

We discuss how ancient pilgrims found their way without all the modern technology. Did they use the sun and stars to guide themselves? Nothing so impractical or romantic. Apparently they all had local guides. We are considering offering our services to future pilgrims. It could be a whole new career.
Matera is the third oldest city in the world and hence has a long and diverse history. There are over 150 churches. Even Alison and Alison don’t have time to visit them all. But we will have a go tomorrow.

Dinner on a terrace overlooking the old city and a plan in place for the next few days.
Hoping for a night without cramp.
Good night.
