Day 36 Castrojeriz to Carron de los Condes

Another early morning. Crossing the maseta before the sun rises high. Our favourite time to ride despite the 5.00am start.

We had three thunder storms today and found plenty of wreckage on the road.

We arrived at 10.15 am. Another record. As we were enjoying a drink the thunder and lightning started again.

The locals rushed for cover whilst we sat under the umbrellas thinking how stoic we were. Then we had the thought that metal seats and lightening are not a good mix. We joined the locals sheltering under the arches of the restaurant.

Only a short mileage today as we decided to treat ourselves. We are staying in a converted monastery.

Not any old monastery but a 4* luxury monastery with air conditioning, fluffy white towels, a restaurant with dinner and breakfast.

Half way through the Camino and a restful day. Visited museums and churches in town and planned our onward route. It is getting busier and finding accommodation will become more of a challenge. We might even book a few days in advance. Goodness we are becoming sensible.

    Back in Park Hill, profound concern about friends on metal cycles sitting at metal tables in thunderstorms was completely forgotten when news of the first fluffy white towels of the journey were reported. Anxiety was simply replaced by rejoicing. To know you would be drying your smalls in splendour was met with celebrations that put those recent jubilee ones in the shade. Pedal well and keep safe!
